HOA for 55+ Community in Jacksonville, Florida Demands $1000 From Each Resident to Sue Younger Woman For Living There

Should an HOA be allowed to have this kind of power?

Ask most people what makes for a good neighbor, and you will probably hear many of the same things repeated over and over. Somebody who is relatively clean, quiet, and either friendly or good at minding their own business is likely to be prized highly by those looking for a peaceful place to live.

So long as those conditions are met, anybody reasonable is not likely to care about any of the other characteristics of those who live in their neighborhood. Unfortunately, there are a lot of unreasonable neighbors out there, particularly when they are attached to some kind of homeowner association. These organisations are notorious for introducing random and occasionally discriminatory rules where they are not necessary, and enforcing them in such a way that it makes residents miserable. If they are supposed to improve the living experience of those in the neighborhood, they can do a pretty poor job of it.

Being on the wrong side of an HOA can feel like an impossible situation. They wield enough power and influence to have a significant impact on a person's experience of simply existing in their home, often for seemingly trivial reasons.

  • A woman made a plea for help when the HOA for the 55+ community in her neighborhood started a concentrated campaign to get her to move out because she was under their preferred age range. They wanted each one of the 155 residents to contribute $1000 towards the legal costs of suing her for where she lived. A refusal to pay would lead to a $100 charge on her HOA bill for the next 10 months.

    “Not only do I have to pay my own attorney, but I also have to pay the thousand-dollar assessment,” she complained. “I have to pay both sides.” Whatever added context there may be to this situation, there is no denying that they are going to extreme lengths to reject a single resident.

  • m@tloacapitalist When I was 14-17 I lived in a senior community because my grandpa owned the condo and the old people would not leave me alone. If I was at the pool they would demand to know my address and question me like I didn't actually live there it was exhausting
